Common Chemistry Laboratory TechniquesThere are many different chemical and biological laboratory techniques that need to be used in order to perform experiments. They vary based on the type of experiment, however, and for some experiments specific techniques may be necessary. Here are some common techniques that are used in most labs.Chemical Reactions. This is a method of breaking down a mixture into its components, usually a base and an acid, then combining them together to form a new substance. An example of this would be hydrochloric acid and water, which are used in making a simple cleaning product. This is also used in many chemical reactions.Oxidation Process. This is a process where molecules are chemically altered in such a way that they will combine with each other to form new substances. There are many different types of oxidation, including oxidation of oxygen, and reduction. These two are more commonly used in laboratories than the other types. Oxidation is used in many chemical reactions to combine elements together and create different compounds.Solvents. This is a mixture of solid and liquid materials that is usually mixed together to create a mixture of solids and liquids. They are used for removing oils from clothing, to remove stains from cloth, and for disinfecting, among other things. Solvents can be used in various ways to help perform experiments.Concentrated Gas. This is a mixture of gases which has been stirred up and compressed. The gases are then allowed to enter a specially designed container that contains a gas that the scientist wants to study. This is most often used in conjunction with inert gases.Vapor. This is a method of using a flame to heat a solid or liquid and forcing it through a tiny tube orifice. The heat can be transmitted to other gases or to the sample being heated. Vapor can be used in laboratories for vapor deposition and solid-liquid mixtures, but also in other fields like medical testing and imaging.Vacuum. This is a gas that is generally odorless and does not create any vapor, unlike the others mentioned above. This is used in experiments which require a little power and have higher temperatures. This can also be used for certain oil and solvent extraction processes.Using these laboratory techniques is fairly straightforward and can be easily learned. With the proper techniques, it can be easy to do a variety of different types of experiments.
